The content of a layer itself can also become a mask for the upper layer. This, within Photoshop, is called a clipping mask and is very useful to generate effects in certain areas of our compositions.
There is another concept of masking that will be very useful when working. And it will consist of a layer making a mask of the layers immediately above and cut by it. Let’s see how it can be done. For example, I will come and I will activate, in this case, the typography layer. And I’m also going to activate the fill layer. We are seeing that the typography is in dark, the filling layer has a brown color. But I am going to try that only the color that is in the upper layer can be seen through the text that is in the lower layer. For this I select the top layer and I can come to the drop-down menu to tell you to create a clipping mask, or what is the same “Alt + Ctrl + G”, “Option + Command + G”, or even if I position myself in between of the two layers with the “Alt” key pressed, we can see how the pointer is modified. It would be the same when doing a click, we can see how the upper layer is only seeing what is in the lower layer with pixel information. That way I create a clipping mask.
I will do the same in this case with the rectangle. And with the rectangle what I’m going to do is to lower this layer just above the rectangle, and I’m going to do the same, I’m going to go inside the drop-down menu and I’m going to tell you to create a clipping mask. As we can see now, only that dotting is being seen through the information in the pixels of the rectangle layer. If I edit at any time what would be the behavior of that layer we can see that nothing happens, it is still applied in the same way, I will even be able to give some mode of fusion to the layer even being inside a layer crop. And I’ll be able to tell you, in this case I’m going to give it “Multiply” although as we can see, the white is eliminated by the tonality that this rectangle has in the lower part. I’m going to do a double click to change the color, in this case we’re going to place it around here, and let’s see how we can make certain layers of the top part only visualize where the bottom part is, that is, in the areas in which the lower layer has information. And the transparent areas from this point on remain transparent within the layer cutout.
